Broome STEM Festival returns for two days of family fun

The Kids Research Institute Australia will return to the Kimberley in May for the Broome STEM Festival, promising two fun-filled days of hands-on science activities for local families to experience.

The Kids Research Institute Australia will return to the Kimberley in May for the Broome STEM Festival, promising two fun-filled days of hands-on science activities for local families to experience.

The festival offers a unique opportunity for children and families to delve into the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Kids can explore interactive displays, meet researchers, participate in fun and educational experiments, and see STEM in action.

Activities include:

  • UV Beads and Sunscreen Experiment: Children will learn about UV radiation and how sunscreen protects their skin through a hands-on experiment using UV-sensitive beads.
  • Sugar in Drinks Activity: This eye-opening activity raises awareness about the amount of sugar in popular drinks and encourages healthier choices by visually comparing sugar content in different beverages.
  • Microscope Activity: In this activity participants can look under the microscope and see what their organs look like on a cellular level. They can also use a surface microscope to see what their skin cells look like.

This year’s festival is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Broome International Airport, Broome Civic Centre, CFC Foundation, and Engineers Australia.

It also provides families with a valuable opportunity to connect with passionate researchers and scientists from The Kids and other local Broome organisations, including Nulungu, Broome Library, KAHRA/KAMS, Kimberley Land Council and Rangelands NRM.

Attendees can learn firsthand about their fascinating work and discoveries, potentially inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders.

Senior Manager, Community Engagement at The Kids, Belinda Frank, said the Institute was proud to deliver the Broome STEM Festival once again in 2025, following its success over the past two years.

“This event is all about inspiring curiosity and creativity in young minds through fun, hands-on STEM experiences,” Ms Frank said.

“It’s also a chance for the community to connect with our research — to see the science behind the work we do and how it’s helping shape the future of child health. We’re excited to welcome children and families back for two afternoons of learning, discovery, and connection.”
