Long term lung health in children: new emerging threats and preventive strategies

The long-term consequences of early adverse exposures are well known but is becoming clear that early means not just in pregnancy but also in at least the two preceding generations. Furthermore, there are new existential threats to long term respiratory health, some of which have been presented at the INSPiRED meeting in Bologna and are reviewed in this manuscript.

Reduced Prevalence of Impaired Awareness of Hypoglycemia Over Two Decades in Population-Based Samples of Youth With Type 1 Diabetes

To investigate the change in prevalence of impaired awareness of hypoglycemia (IAH) and severe hypoglycemia (SH) across three cohorts (2002, 2015, and 2024) in youth with type 1 diabetes.

Living next door to McDonald’s: a qualitative study of community submissions and resident realities pre- and post development

The proliferation of fast-food outlets in residential areas has raised growing concerns about their impact on community health, safety, and wellbeing. This qualitative study examined both pre-development community consultation submissions and post-development resident experiences surrounding the development of a McDonald's outlet in a newly established suburb on the urban fringe of Perth, Western Australia.

Vaccine uptake in the context of mandate announcement and removal: Evidence from Europe and North America

The COVID-19 pandemic drove the implementation of vaccine mandates to protect spaces and/or increase vaccine uptake, though their design, timing, and scope varied across jurisdictions. This study examines the associations of vaccine mandate announcements and removals with COVID-19 vaccine uptake in France, Italy, and California (USA).

Dose-dependent hepatotoxicity of hydrogen peroxide in HepG2 cells and its modulation by CYP450 induction

In vitro liver models combined with metabolomics approaches offer promising alternatives to animal testing in toxicology. In this study, we investigated concentration-dependent effects of hydrogen peroxide on the intra- and extracellular metabolome of HepG2 cells using 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy.

Host Immune Response to Scabies

Scabies infection is associated with heightened total IgE immunoglobulin and IgE antibodies to scabies antigens, with both being extremely high for crusted scabies patients. The IgE antibodies cross-react with house dust mite allergens with high reactivity found to the minor allergen arginine kinase.

Targeted Therapy for Systemic Epstein-Barr Virus–Positive T-Cell Lymphoma of Childhood

Systemic Epstein-Barr virus-positive T-cell lymphoma of childhood (STCLC) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy with a dismal prognosis and no standard curative treatment. This report describes the first reported case of STCLC in a White child who, after experiencing failure with intensive chemotherapy regimens, achieved a complete response following targeted immunotherapy.

Exercise as a novel treatment to improve engagement with mental health services in youth with clinical mental illness: Review and recommendations

The declining mental health of youth in late adolescence and early adulthood represents a serious public health concern, resulting in substantial symptom burden, mortality, and societal cost. Despite this, youth with clinical mental illnesses show poor engagement with mental health services.

Clinicians’ experience with trauma-related dissociation in CAMHS: A reflexive thematic analysis

This study examined how mental health clinicians conceptualise, assess, and treat dissociation in children and adolescents, and examined their confidence in working with these presentations to inform clinical practice.

Toxicity of plastic diesel exhaust in primary human airway epithelial cell cultures

Plastic pyrolysis oil, which can be produced with similar properties as diesel fuel (plastic diesel), can be used as an alternative to mineral diesel (ULSD) to run a diesel engine. This presents a potential method for recycling waste plastic. Typically plastic diesel is blended with mineral diesel, and oxygenated fuel additives such as ethers added to improve resulting fuel properties.
